Class of 2009
members toured the construction site
of Dominion's Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center,
Virginia's largest private construction project.
The
Class of 2009 visited the Southwest region of Virginia September 17-19.
During their session, they met local leaders whose dedication
to the Southwest and its future sustainability was inspring. In
addition, they visited the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center
(SVHEC), Dominion Resources' construction site of Virginia City
Hybrid Energy Center, Mountain Rose Vineyard, The University of
Virginia's College at Wise, and historic downtown Abingdon's Farmers
Market and Barter Theater. The group heard from Michael J. Quillen,

Blackburn, Round the Mountain Artisans Group; Christianne E. Parker,
Assistant Couty Administrator for Washington County; Lyn Tatum,
CGI Technologies & Solutions, Inc.; Tom Deadrick, One

Leopold, Dominion Resources; Dr. David Prior,
Chancellor of The University of Virginia's College at Wise, LEAD VIRGINIA Board

discussed issues that not only affect the southwest area, but impact
the entire Commonwealth.

Director, LENOWISCO Planning District Commission, LEAD VIRGINIA '08.

class members heard from Marcia
Quesenberry, Executive Assistant to the Chancellor
and Director of Strategic Planning at The University of Virginia's
College at Wise, and LEAD
VIRGINIA alum from the Class of 2006 about the
Healthy Appalachia Institute. Formally recognized and named in
October 2008, the Healthy Appalachia Institute is a vehicle that
strives to end poverty, advance educational opportunity, encourage
prosperity and promote health, including ensuring access to health
care. The HAI's goals include developing a common understanding
of the health status of the region, to craft and implement a single
strategic health plan, and to operate an institution that ensures a
healthier future for the residents of Southwest Virginia and Central
Appalachia.

Make note of these two important events:
- As
the Class of 2009's expedition of economic development,
education and healthcare through Virginia's rich regions closes,
we will celebrate the completion of the participants' experience
with a graduation ceremony. On Friday, November 20, the
graduation reception will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be
followed by dinner and program. Please join us at The
Jefferson Hotel on West Franklin Street in Richmond
in congratulating the Class of 2009. Invitations will be
mailed mid-October.
- Also
on Friday,
November 20, alumni are invited to join the
class for an afternoon panel on healthcare. The speakers
include: Dr. William Hazel, Jr., member of the Board of
Trustees, American Medical Association; Andrew Webber, President
& CEO, National Business Coalition on Health; Bill Kallio,
State Director, AARP and Peter Marmestein, CEO, HCA CJW
Hospital.

We are
delighted to announce that LEAD
VIRGINIA is being recognized by the VCU Wilder School of
Government and Public Affairs with their 2009 Excellence in
Government Community Enhancement Award. These awards
have become a hallmark of excellence for VCU and the Commonwealth of
Virginia, and we are thrilled that LEAD
VIRGINIA will receive this recognition. What a
wonderful way to end 2009 and kick off the 5th anniversary for LEAD VIRGINIA
in 2010!
This year's event is being held on Thursday, December 3rd from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00
p.m. at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. We
hope you can all join in attending this prestigious event. To

The Southern Growth Board hosts its Green Business Forum
on October
23, 2009 in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
Forum participants will hear from Southern business owners on
"greening" your business. Keynote speakers include: Harry Wingo,
Policy Counsel for Google, Inc., David Kirkpatrick, Managing
Partner for SJF Ventures, and Kil Huh, Project Director of
Research for Pew Center on the States. They will discuss energy
efficiency and renewable energy as ways to improve profits,
alternative fuels and renewable energy, and public policy activity.
