| LEAD VIRGINIA Recruiting Events are being scheduled throughout Virginia, and you are invited to attend and bring prospective candidates for the Class of 2009 to hear more about the LEAD VIRGINIA program. LEAD VIRGINIA depends on our alumni and friends to identify potential applicants and encourage them to apply. The Class of 2009 application is available online at www.leadvirginia.org.
Application deadline is January 15, 2009.

June 4-6, 2009: LEAD VIRGINIA Alumni Conference focusing on Virginia's Northern Neck with accommodations at The Tides Inn. Topics to be covered include the Northern Neck's Economy, Education and Health, with Energy included as part of the content. LEAD VIRGINIA current class and alumni were
well-represented at The University of Richmond's Jepson School of Leadership program in October on "What Lincoln Was Up Against: The Context of Leadership" with noted American South Historian Dr. Edward Ayers as speaker. Our appreciation to the Jepson School for extending an invitation for LEAD VIRGINIA to participate.
Shane Adams '06 has been busy with much to show for his efforts. Shane was recently elected Chairman of the U.S. Chamber's Board of Regents for its Institute for Organizational Management, a four-year professional development program for Chamber executives. He was elected Chairman of the Virginia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives, and his community's tourism program, operated jointly through the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce and Blacksburg/Christiansburg Tourism Development Council, was recognized as Best in the Southeast with the Shining Example Award by the Southeast
Tourism Society.
Rich Doud '05, is being honored by the Arlington Community Foundation with its William T. Newman Jr. Spirit of Community Award on November 12. Rich is being recognized for his tireless and unselfish commitment to improving the quality of life in Arlington. Rich has been a resident of Arlington for more than 50 years and has served as President of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce since 1990. Congratulations Rich!

Jennifer Sager Gentry '06 invites LEAD VIRGINIA colleagues to a benefit performance of KOOZA, Cirque du Soleil's new touring show, on December 5, 2008 at National Harbor benefitting The Virginia Foundation for Community College Education. The evening includes cocktails in Cirque's private Tapis Rouge™ suite, great seats, and dessert following the show. Tickets are $500 per person. The event begins with cocktails at 7 pm with the show following at 8 pm. For more information contact Jennifer Sager Gentry at jgentry@vccs.edu or 804-819-4962. Proceeds from the event will support Great Expectations, a new educational initiative for Virginia's foster youth.
The Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership is a non-partisan organization dedicated to improving political leadership throughout Virginia. Sorensen's Political Leaders Program and Candidate Training Program provide an opportunity for leaders to develop meaningful relationships with Virginians of differing political viewpoints and from other areas of the state. At the heart of every Sorensen program are three central themes: ethics in public service, the power of bipartisanship, and a concentrated study of public policy issues.
Sorensen seeks participants from all political affiliations, socio- economic backgrounds and professions from across Virginia. To learn more about the programs or to apply please visit

The Pew Partnership for Civic Change, in partnership with Virginia Tech's Center for Organizational and Technological Advancement is offering Leadership Plenty, a training program for leaders who want to work with others to take action in their communities Nov. 17-19 in Roanoke. LEAD VIRGINIA Board Member Suzanne Morse will participate as a presenter in the program, which offers detailed plans for delivering nine highly interactive sessions or "modules" that equip participants with key skills needed for community problem solving. Identifying community assets, managing conflict, planning for action, and measuring results are just a few of those skills. For more information about LeadershipPlenty, contact tballen@vt.edu.
Margaret Lewis, President of HCA Capital Division and Inaugural Board Member for LEAD VIRGINIA will be recognized in November in Washington, DC by the Washington Business Journal as part of their recognition ceremonies for the 2008 Women Who Mean Business. The honorees represent women from every industry and profession, women who've made a difference in their communities, blazed a trail for the rest of us and are leaving a mark on Washington business.
